Alison Styring is primarily concerned with the avifauna of Southeast Asia, with woodpeckers and ground hornbills occupying a special place in her research. Since 2011 she has been planning a large-scale mapping of the Tawau Hills Park on Borneo , whereby bird and other animal sounds of the species there are to be collected. Her approach to financing the project attracted media attention. Styring discontinued its project on the crowdsourcing platform kickstarter.com and asked interested Internet users to donate the US $ 20,000 . Styring explained this procedure by saying that conventional institutions for the promotion of science had shown no interest in a project whose direct financial benefit was rather low. However, the Kickstarter funding failed because the planned donation amount did not materialize.
