Allar Jõks

Allar Jõks (born March 18, 1965 in Tartu ) is an Estonian lawyer. From 2001 to 2008 he was the Legal Chancellor (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Estonia.

Early years

Allar Jõks attended middle school in Kullamaa until 1983 . He completed his law studies at the University of Tartu in 1991 .

From 1991 to 1995 Jõks was a judge at the district court of the West Estonian district of Lääne . He then worked as a judge in Tallinn until 2001 and at the same time chairman of the Estonian Judges' Association (Eesti Kohtunike Ühing) .

Legal Chancellor

In 2001 Jõks was elected Chancellor (Õiguskantsler) of the Republic of Estonia in secret by the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) on the proposal of President Lennart Meri . The office corresponds to that of an ombudsman . The Estonian constitution guarantees the ombudsman a strong position under constitutional law and great independence. At the end of 2007, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves proposed the popular Jõks for re-election; but this failed in parliament.

Allar Jõks has been working as a lawyer for the Sorainen business law firm since 2009 .
