Allen Carr

Allen Carr (born September 2, 1934 in London , † November 29, 2006 in Málaga ) was a British author of books on the subject of life support. Carr designed self-help seminars and wrote down his experiences in books and guides.

Life

His first and at the same time most successful work is the book Finally Non-Smoking (original title: Allen Carr's Easyway to stop smoking ). In this book, the former chain smoker presents the Easyway method , developed through his own experience , with which even long-standing or heavy smokers can quit smoking in the shortest possible time . With his method, he shows and proves that the problem with quitting is not the physical dependence on nicotine, but the illusion that smoking gives you an advantage or added value over a non-smoker - and that is the illusion / deception or like Allen Carr it called "the smoking brainwashing". Allen Carr proves two basic things: a) that a smoker is not better off when he smokes, but just a little bit less bad, and b) that you don't need to have willpower not to do something you don't like to do. (Smokers call it "the kick", the short-term "good feeling").

The smoker should continue to smoke almost until the end of the weaning process by reading the book or attending a Carr seminar. Only at the end of the reading or at the end of the seminar does the smoker no longer touch another cigarette "as if by himself", because "positive brainwashing" (Carr himself in his book), i.e. the mental liberation from emotional and psychological associations with the Smoking, then already works. Prominent proponents of the method include Anthony Hopkins and Richard Branson .

According to him, Carr's method can be applied to any addiction. In Finally Without Alcohol , he denies the existence of alcoholism as society sees it (p. 577, 1) and makes the claim that the cause of the panic that alcoholics suffer from abstaining from alcohol is not physical withdrawal (p . 606). He also wrote a guide to weight loss.

In late July 2006, a routine check-up found Allen Carr to have lung cancer . According to his own information, he had not smoked himself for over 23 years. Friends of the author attributed the disease primarily to the years he had been conducting his smoking cessation courses, in which people were allowed to smoke vigorously at the beginning. “If that's the price I have to pay to have helped so many smokers,” he said, “I'll be happy to pay it. I'm sure I would have died 20 years ago if I hadn't spent the last 23 years as a non-smoker. I consider these years to be the most valuable of my life. "

Carr died on November 29, 2006 at the age of 72 from complications from lung cancer.
