Ocimene

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ocimene (stress on the third syllable: Ocim e ne ) form a group of isomeric unsaturated acyclic monoterpenes and thus belong to the hydrocarbons .

Representative

The isomeric representatives of the ocimene differ in the positioning of the double bonds in the molecule or the arrangement of the substituents on the double bonds ( cis-trans isomerism ).

Occurrence

α-Ocimen was found in real lavender oil (up to 3%), β-Ocimen is found in basil oil ( Ocimum basilicum ) and up to 41% in the essential oil of marigolds (Tagetes minuta, Asteraceae).

Properties and use

The ocimenes are isomeric to myrcene and phellandrene and are often a mixture. Their smell is reminiscent of pine and citrus fruit, so they are used as fragrances.
