Alois Kostner , also known as Luis Moler , (* May 8, 1856 in Stern / La Ila , Val Badia ; † May 29, 1918 in Ortisei in Val Gardena ) was a barrel painter from Val Gardena .

biography

Kostner began his apprenticeship in Plan near Wolkenstein at the age of 16 , attended the art school in Ortisei and in 1879 went to Munich, where he enjoyed further training as a gilder .

The mother Genoveffa Sefa dala Cazines lived in the Planaces farm in Ortisei and was known for her art as a knitter of traditional hats . In 1883 Kostner bought the Pana house on the Panabrücke in Ortisei from the Pertan family . He married Mrs. Johanna Stuflesser-Petlin, the sister of the altar builder Ferdinand Stuflesser on April 23, 1883 and had five children: Johann, Marianna, Ferdinand, Engl and Franziska.

Kostner expanded the Pana house and built two more houses, where he ran the largest painting workshop in Ortisei. He made church furnishings together with his brother-in-law Ferdinand Stuflesser, which they sold all over the world.

In 1898 he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem with 500 Tyroleans. He brought relics with him from his pilgrimage to the Holy Land , which he had installed in a wood-carved statue of the Madonna on the high altar of the parish church of his birthplace Stern in Val Badia.

In 1908 Kostner financed the construction of the new school building for the Sisters of Mercy in Bolzano and was therefore awarded the papal medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice .

Like many painters in the 20th century, Kostner was also a photographer and left a collection of photos from many farms in Val Gardena.
