Alotenango or San Juán Alotenango is a small town with approx. 12,000 inhabitants or a municipality ( municipio ) with approx. 18,000 inhabitants in the central highlands of Guatemala .
location
The community, located about 14 km southwest of Antigua, extends at the foot of the three volcanoes Agua , Fuego and Acatenango at an altitude of about 1400 to 1500 m above sea level. d. M. Guatemala (City) , the capital of the country, is approx. 52 km to the northeast. The climate is temperate; in the summer months there is significantly more rain than in the winter half-year.
Residents
The inhabitants are mostly descendants of the Cakchiquel - Maya ; many have immigrated from the surrounding mountain regions. In addition to the Mayan language Cakchiquel , Spanish is also spoken.
economy
Agriculture forms the basis of food for the population in many ways. Traditional staple foods are corn , beans and tomatoes , but plants imported by the Spanish conquerors such as chilli and onions have also been grown for a long time. Non- native plants mainly for export are coffee , cashews , macadamia and medlar .
history
The valley was already inhabited in pre-Hispanic times; Alotenango is mentioned in the Popul Vuh under the name Vucuc caquix . The Spaniards called the place San Juán , but they kept the Indian name.
Attractions
The most important attraction is the church of San Juán , built in the 18th century, with its broad facade framed by two side bell towers , which is divided by four columns . The pillars on the upper floor of the bell towers show decorative forms of the Churrigueresque style .
