Aloys Aegydius Biber , also Aloys Biber for short , (born September 1, 1804 in Ellingen , † December 13, 1858 in Munich ) was a German piano and harpsichord maker. He belongs to the “Biber” family of piano makers.

life and work

Aloys Aegydius Biber learned the piano-making trade from his father Andreas Clemens and from his brother Anton Dominikus Biber in Ellingen. In 1833 he moved to Munich. In 1848 he was granted a license to build a piano factory there and the title of “court piano manufacturer”.

He further developed the English piano mechanics and invented the so-called "sound machine", which produced a powerful bell tone in the higher octaves. This invention was awarded a gold medal at the industrial exhibition in Mainz in 1842. Aloys Biber's instruments were highly valued because of their "richness of sound and uniformity of timbre across the entire range".
