Alois Baeriswyl (also Aloys Baeriswyl ; born May 9, 1889 in Alterswil ; † February 21, 1960 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) was a Swiss politician and State Councilor of the Canton of Friborg .

Life

His parents were Johann Baeriswyl, Grand Councilor, and Katharina geb. Waeber. He married Philomena Vaucher and, secondly, Anna Troxler, widow of a doctor. His father Johann was a councilor, and his grandfather Christoph was sent to prison in the former Augustinian monastery as a precaution during the Posieux Assembly (1852).

After attending the colleges in Freiburg and Sarnen , where Aloys Baeriswyl took the classic Matura , he broke off his law studies at the University of Freiburg in the summer of 1914 to succeed his father as administrator of the Sparkasse of the Sense district in Tafers . In 1919 he was a co-founder of the Conservative People's Party in Deutschfreiburg.

As a representative of the Sense District, he sat in the Grand Council (1916–1930), became a judge at the district court, senior magistrate of the Sense District (1930–1936) and in 1936 first Sense and from 1857 first German-speaking State Councilor. Until 1946 he was head of the management of parishes, parishes and forests, then he headed the building management until 1956.

At first he advocated a more efficient administration of the cantonal forests and the state vineyards. He made sure that each of the 284 Freiburg municipalities received a coat of arms so that the flags waving at the 1939 National Exhibition in Zurich complied with the strict heraldic regulations, and he campaigned for loans to municipalities in financial difficulties.

As construction director, he was committed to the expansion of the road network and was particularly responsible for the construction of the Javroz and Galtern bridges. As President of the State Council, he inaugurated the Rossens dam, but in 1943, for health reasons, he had to refrain from voting on the corresponding credit, which his deputy Joseph Piller defended. He also promoted the development of tourism. In 1941, 1948 and 1953 he was President of the State Council. During his first presidium on July 27, 1941, he gave the speech in the Grand Council Chamber on the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation.

Aloys Baeriswyl was a member of the boards of several transport and tourism companies. He was also chairman of the board of directors of Freiburgische Elektrizitätswerke (FEW) and the Sparkasse des Sense district, as well as vice-chairman of the central committee of the Konkordia health insurance company. From 1930 he chaired the board of directors of the Freiburger Nachrichten as well as numerous agricultural and social organizations. Until his death he also campaigned as president for the St. Joseph asylum for the deaf and dumb on the Guintzet. He embodied the upswing of the Catholic German Friborg.

He died on February 21, 1960 at the age of 71 in Freiburg. Federal Councilor Jean Bourgknecht attended his funeral. As the cantonal government emphasized, "he leaves behind the memory of a lovable, fatherly and homely council of state, who was completely imbued with the spirit of progress and advocated healthy and good administration".
