The Alpenbach arises in the northern part of the municipality of Kainach near Voitsberg , north of the village of Gallmannsegg , on the southeast slope of the Ochsenkogel , southwest of the Schanzkreuz. In the upper reaches it flows in a flat right-hand curve through the so-called Wispelwald to the southeast, before it turns onto a southwest course at the scattered settlement of Forstbauerngraben . In the lower reaches, it first flows relatively straight to the south-west, before turning on a relatively straight south-south-west course about 1 km from its mouth. North of Gallmannsegg it flows east of Hof Sadner and west of Hof Weber into the Kainach , which then flows straight on. On its course, the Alpenbach takes on three larger, named and several small and unnamed watercourses.
