Alperton Underground Station
Alperton is an above-ground London Underground station in the London Borough of Brent . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 4, at the intersection of Bridgewater Road and Ealing Road. In 2013, 2.96 million passengers used this station served by the Piccadilly Line . The Grand Union Canal runs in the immediate vicinity .
The Metropolitan District Railway (MDR; predecessor of today's District Line ) opened a new line from Park Royal & Twyford Abbey to South Harrow on June 28, 1903 . The section between Ealing Common and Park Royal & Twyford Abbey had opened five days earlier. The new line was - together with the existing tracks from Acton Town - the first electrified underground railway. On October 7, 1910, the MDR changed the name of the station from Perivale Alperton to Alperton . Operations on the route between Ealing Common and Rayners Lane were transferred to the Piccadilly Line on July 4, 1932 .
The original station building was made of wood and was kept simple. It was demolished in 1930/31 in preparation for the transfer of the line to the Piccadilly Line and replaced by a new building. According to the plans of Charles Holden , a building was created that combines functionalism and Art Deco . It consists of a massive block of red bricks towering above a flat, functional building with high ceilings that allow a lot of natural daylight to penetrate the counter hall. Alperton is the only station besides Greenford that has an escalator up to the platform instead of down.
