The Altındere ( Turkish for “Gold Brook”) is a small river after which the Altındere National Park (Turkish: Altındere Millî Parkı) was named.
The ancient name of the river is Pyxites and it was mentioned in Quintus Curtius ' story of Alexander . Jakob Philipp Fallmerayer describes in detail the valley from the mouth at Trapezunt (today Trabzon ) to the Sumela monastery in his travelogue “Fragments from the Orient” from 1840.
The Christian monasteries Sumela , Vazelon , Kaymaklı , Peristera and Kizlar are located on the river and its tributaries .
