The Alta Wind Energy Center is an operating wind farm located in California , United States . With an installed capacity of over 1,548 MW , it will be the largest wind farm in the country until the XI wind farm is commissioned . [Obsolete] It is located on Tehachapi Pass in the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County . When completed, the wind farm will supply around 450,000 households with electricity.

In 2010, a wind farm with 320 wind turbines and an installed capacity of up to 800 MW was specified as the planning target . Construction began in March 2010 and should be completed in early 2011. In 2014, the work on some extensions was completed. In September 2016, the California Energy Commission stated an output of 1,548 MW. This is to be increased to 3,000 MW by 2040.

The main project developer for the wind farm was Terra-Gen Power . The individual projects belong to NRG Renew (948 MW), BHE Renewables (300 MW), EverPower (150 MW) and Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners (150 MW).
The wind farm pays around 30 million US dollars in leases annually . Since the park is mainly on private land, these go to the local landowners. Furthermore, more than 40 million taxes are paid annually.
