The Altai Osman ( Oreoleuciscus potanini ), in Russian алтайский осман Потанина, is a large species of carp from Central Asia .

description

The medium-sized Altai Osman is very similar in habit to asp . It has a small head, very small scales and a greenish to golden yellow color. The underside of the abdomen is also yellow. The maximum age of Oreoleuciscus potanini should be up to 40 years. In 2009, a 5.8 kilogram specimen was caught from Khoton Lake, Mongolia. From the lakes Hyargas, Durgun and Uureg, fish weighing 10 kilograms and a length of one meter were also reported.

distribution and habitat

The Altai Osman occurs in the waters of the Altai Mountains in Mongolia . It is relatively common in the following mountain lakes, Tsagan Nuur Lake and Kolobolchi Nuur Lake. Another distribution area is southern Siberia on the upper reaches of the Ob and Irtysh rivers . It lives in lakes and in the lower reaches of rivers that flow into these lakes.

Way of life

The Altai Osman prefers water temperatures of 10 to 20 ° C, so it is absent in the very cold high mountain lakes. The spawning season takes place in the months of July to August. Age and height at sexual maturity can vary widely. In the mountain lake Sangiyn Dalai, sexual maturity begins at an age of 15 years and a body length of 250 to 300 millimeters. In Boon Tsagaan Lake at the age of five to six years and a length of 200 millimeters. The fertility of females ranges from 5,200 to 52,600 fish eggs, usually 23,600. The fish occur in different age groups from four to 25 and eight to ten years. The Altai Osman is omnivorous and adapts quickly and opportunistically to the food spectrum that occurs in each case.

use

Oreoleuciscus potanini is an edible and sport fish for predatory anglers . Since it can weigh up to 10 kilograms, it is just as popular with anglers as the Taimen . Some operators offer organized fishing trips focusing on both types of fish in Mongolia.
