The Altamont Corridor Express , until 2013 Altamont Commuter Express (to German Altamont Vorortexpress ), regularly abbreviated ACE , is a regional train in California that runs from northeast to southwest, from northeast Stockton via Fremont to southwest San José . About migration in San José to Caltrain and VTA is Silicon Valley connected.

The name Altamont is derived from the Altamont Pass , 308 meters high , over which the route leads. The railway line has been in operation since October 19, 1998 with originally two pairs of trains a day (on weekdays in both directions) and since November 2009 with three pairs of trains. Four pairs of trains have been operating since October 1, 2012. Along the 138 km it stops at ten stations, and Bombardier BiLevel double-decker cars are used on MPI F40PH-3C diesel locomotives. The client is the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission (Regional Train Commission San Joaquin) and the current operator is the Herzog Transit Services Gesellschaft. In 2008, 3700 passengers were carried daily.

In 2013 the name was changed from Commuter Express to Corridor Express in order to emphasize the increased importance also outside of commuters. It is considered to expand the ACE transport network with a Modesto-Sacramento and a Stockton-Pittsburg line (expected to be [obsolete] in 2018 ). In the ACEforward program set up in 2013, rails and stations are also being modernized, and new stations and tracks are planned, which are intended to remove the limited capacities of the currently largely single-track line.

The ACE connects a number of railway lines - in addition to the connections in San Jose to the Caltrain and VTA Light Rail, it also connects the Capitol Corridor , Coast Starlight and the San Joaquin line . The BART station West Dublin / Pleasanton is not connected directly, but is reached via a bus shuttle (operated by WHEELS) via the ACE train station in Pleasanton. As part of the California High-Speed Rail planning, the ACE will also be able to travel over 200 km / h over the Altamont Pass ("Super-ACE"), and by switching to the San Joaquin Line from 2022, it will offer a connection to high-speed traffic to Los Angeles .
