The old oak was a pedunculate oak and until 1996 the oldest tree in the Berlin district of Kaulsdorf in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district .

history

The old oak was placed under protection by the GDR authorities on October 20, 1983 as a natural monument . The protection status expired in 1990. The attempt to put the tree under protection again after the political change failed. On June 27, 1994, the Upper Nature Conservation Authority of Berlin approved the felling of the oak for the benefit of a private building project. The reason it became known was that "the oak was no longer safe for traffic", the previously ordered measures for pruning the crown and securing systems for branches at risk of breakage were in the opinion of the Senate insufficient to maintain the tree. In November 1994, the Senator for Urban Development and Environmental Protection, Volker Hassemer , reaffirmed the need to fell the oak for reasons of traffic safety. The technical assistance provided by the Hellersdorf district office, as well as crown pruning and securing systems for branches at risk of breaking, were not suitable for preserving the oak.

The Senate decree to fell the oak at Ulmenstrasse 102 within two days was published on March 16, 1995. The following day a demonstrative guard pulled up, including tree protectors from Köpenick . An injunction against the Senate decision was obtained. The Berlin administrative court ruled on November 29, 1995 that the oak could be felled, which happened on January 31, 1996. There are different information about the age of the felled oak: While Schröder gives 150 to 200 years, the Berliner Zeitung gives different information in several articles, ranging from 200 to 250 years.

The oldest tree in Kaulsdorf is now the Balkan horse chestnut north of the village church in front of the house at Dorfstrasse 15. In order to protect it as part of the near-natural environment, it was designated as "according to the decision of March 12, 1930 (according to Section 30 of the Field and Forest Police Act). Horse chestnut, north of the church, in front of the house at Dorfstrasse 15 ( 52 ° 30 ′ 34 ″ N, 13 ° 34 ′ 44 ″ E) in Berlin-Kaulsdorf (Land Register Volume 49, Sheet 1471, Parcel 179/79) declared a “Berlin Natural Monument” . The neighboring thatched farmhouse was not included in the protection.
