Architecture and history

The two-story halftimbered house was built as a school in 1533. The construction was sponsored by the Abbess Anna von Plauen , who was supported by the preacher Stephan Molitor . Initially, the focus was on teaching the Latin language . School attendance was initially only possible for boys. Petrus Eilemann was the first rector and cantor. He was assisted by a coordinator. From 1553 to 1570 Andreas Popperodt was rector. During this time there were four teachers working at the school. From 1572 the school was operated as an elementary school and taught writing, reading, arithmetic, drawing, religion and singing. In that year, Prince Joachim Ernst von Anhalt issued the first school regulations for elementary school. A girls' class is also mentioned for 1585. The sexes were taught separately, there was no differentiation according to age groups. In 1846 the school was closed. The master carpenter bought the property on what was then still known as Schulstrasse .

In 1884 Würfel sold the building to the coal merchant Hartmann. His son-in-law Carl Kellner later set up a watch shop in the house. His son Hermann Kellner opened an optician's shop with a repair shop. On the north side of the house there is a narrow facade in the style of classicism . A shop window and bezel windows were installed in this style.

Inside the building, the appearance goes back in part to the 16th century. This mainly applies to the basement neck and the room structure. On the ground floor of the building there is a historical classroom, which is equipped with school inventory from the 19th and 20th centuries. There are exhibition and meeting rooms on the upper floor. Until the beginning of the 21st century, some of the premises were used for residential purposes. In 1982 the house was included in the list of monuments of the Quedlinburg district .

In 1998 the Gernroder Kulturverein Andreas Popperodt eV, founded on January 23, 1998, acquired the property with the aim of renovating the building. The usable area is given as 360 m². There was a barn in the yard, which was demolished in 1998 because of the risk of collapse. The area is used as an event yard. In October 2004, the property was fenced in again by erecting a picket fence along Klosterstrasse.

In August 2005, the school and city museum old elementary school sign was attached to the house. The exhibition in the building will be expanded to include information on Mohs and Moldenhauer. In April 2006 a vaulted cellar was exposed. In 2008 a historic tiled stove was built on the ground floor . It is heated from a room formerly used as a black kitchen .

In the rear part of the property is delimited by quarry stone walls.
