The Old Church in Dädesjö ( Swedish Dädesjö gamla kyrka ) is an incompletely preserved Romanesque church in the municipality of Växjö in the historic province of Småland in Sweden . The church is known for its late Romanesque painted wooden ceiling (around 1260), which together with the ceilings in St. Michael (Hildesheim) , St. Martin (Zillis) and in Peterborough Cathedral form an excellent monument of painted wooden ceilings from this period.

history

After the new church was built, the old church was used as a warehouse from 1794. In 1906 it was transferred to state ownership. A comprehensive restoration of the building took place from 1938 to 1941. The church is maintained by the Riksantikvarieämbetet , but is still available for services of the Evangelical Lutheran parish.

Only the central nave of the building, which was built from local quarry stone probably in the 12th or 13th century, has survived (internal dimensions 11 × 7.5 m). The choir and apse were torn down after the new church was built in 1793/94. The wall frescoes, including King Canute (it is unclear which one) and fighting lions, are best preserved under the triumphal arch .

The church has a statue of the Virgin Mary from the late 13th century and a figure of Saint Olaf from the first half of the 13th century (the soldier at the saint's feet is a later addition). The sandstone baptismal font from around 1200 with a group of mythical animals, which is not unusual in Småland, has found its way into the new church.

The wooden ceiling consists of softwood boards nailed to the trusses. The figurative representations, washed out by damage to the roof, are each arranged in four fields next to one another, in the west in six fields. The western fields show six angels with ribbons. The other 24 fields show the evangelists in the corners, between Matthew and Luke King David and Abraham . In the following row you can see the Annunciation, Mary and Elisabeth , the dream of Joseph and the birth of Jesus. The third row shows the Annunciation to the Shepherds and three scenes with St. Stephen , including the miracle of the boiled rooster. In the fourth row two fields with the Bethlehemite child murder and two scenes of the flight into Egypt . The fifth row shows the Magi and the adoration of the child. In the sixth row the evangelists Mark and John and Mary's temple passage .
