Architecture and history

The church was built in the late Romanesque period in the first half of the 12th century . It has a single nave, the rectangular church tower is on the east side above the choir. The sound arcades of the tower have set columns. To the east of this is a semicircular apse . The current rectangular nave was probably not built until 1590. During the Thirty Years War , the church was damaged in 1636 and then renovated between 1659 and 1663. The church tower was given a baroque dome, which is crowned by an octagonal lantern . In 1749 the nave was renewed and enlarged. Remnants of the original west wall were found during excavations in 1993.

In the 19th century, however, the church was considered too small and dilapidated. The New Bad Suderode Church, which was inaugurated in 1878, was built in the center of the village . In 1912 the old church was converted into a gym . The church was rebuilt again in the 1990s and has served as the congregation's event center ever since. On November 26th 1994 the Friends of the Old Church Bad Suderode eV was founded. The association organizes cultural events in the church. On February 5, 1995, a service was held in the church for the first time in 120 years.

Inside the church there are remains of late medieval wall paintings. In the choir and on the triumphal arch there are depictions of King David and the wise and foolish virgins from the second quarter of the 13th century, according to another statement from the second half of the 13th century . The virgins can be recognized by the reveal of the triumphal arch, King David on the opposite wall. The paintings were restored between 1992 and 1994.
