The old linden tree in Eschelbronn , a municipality in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg , is a winter linden tree and a registered natural monument . It is located on Bettweg next to the Schwarzbach . It is listed in the protected area directory under the name "Winterlinde Bettweg" with the protected area number 82260200001.

The linden tree was probably planted before 1850 by the great-grandfather of a local farmer named Emil Hauck. Until 1862 this was one of the most important crossings to the neighboring communities. There is also a historical stone signpost directly in front of the tree with information on the duration of the journey to the neighboring communities of Mönchzell and Meckesheim .

A winter linden tree, which was presumably planted at the same time and also designated as a natural monument, was located at the Eschelbronn cemetery until October 2019 .

Towards the end of the 20th century the linden tree lost its vitality, as the roots were probably damaged during the construction of the adjacent rainwater retention basin in the 1980s. In addition, an area around the tree was paved, which should also have contributed to the health impairment.

Cultural meaning

With a previous bank , the Linde has been a meeting place for young people and retirees for several generations. The place was once also called the "Armor meeting point" because lovers met there. Young people used the location of the tree next to the Schwarzbach as a swimming area.
