Eschelbronn cemetery

The Eschelbronn cemetery is a cemetery on the Vorderen Weißenberg in the Baden-Württemberg community of Eschelbronn in the Rhein-Neckar district .

history

Eschelbronn graves list, compiled by Mayor Karl Ferch in 1953

In front of today's cemetery, according to stories and bone finds, there was a local burial site next to the Lutheran church built in 1575 , in the place of which the Protestant church was later built.

Today's cemetery was given a new driveway in 1962, with an existing ice cellar being filled in to store beer for local breweries. In 1966 a morgue with an ecumenical chapel was built. Since 1974/1974 there has been a water supply line from the local network to the elevated reservoir in the Weißer Berg Gewann via the rear part of the cemetery.

In the 20th century, the cemetery was delimited to the west by a row of locust trees . The trees were felled in 1996 to allow a clear view of the community, which caused internal controversy.

In 2019 there were redevelopment plans for the cemetery. This included renovating the stairs and creating burial facilities under trees.

Chapel and morgue

Chapel and morgue

At first, there was only a tool shed on the eastern cemetery wall on the cemetery grounds.

With the population growth after the Second World War , the need for a morgue in the cemetery to store the dead increased in the following decades . For this purpose, surrounding land was acquired in 1960 under the then mayor Philipp Dinkel and in 1966 an ecumenical chapel with an associated mortuary was completed according to plans by the Eschelbronn architect Albert Dieruff.

The chapel has a four meter high and three meter long lead glass window by Dietrich Flamme on the north side , consisting of over 20,000 pieces of glass. After the metal construction became discolored and rusted, a replica was made in 1987 by the Glaskunst Nikolaus Dierig company from Überlingen on Lake Constance and used in 1988.
