The war memorial in the Eschelbronn cemetery

The war memorial in Eschelbronn , a municipality in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg , is a war memorial to commemorate the Franco-German War and its participants and victims. After several repairs, it is now in the Eschelbronn cemetery .

history

A postcard from before 1900 shows the war memorial on the market square

The war memorial was financed by donations and the military association and made by the sculptors Dietz and Schmitt in Kirchardt. In August 1886 it was placed on the town square. On 28/29 In August of the same year, the monument was inaugurated as part of a two-day celebration. On August 28, there was a torchlight procession through the town with music, the following day a procession and the actual unveiling with ceremonial speeches and in the presence of 24 foreign military associations. The inauguration of the monument was followed by the flag consecration of the military association. The monument, which is now free, was initially surrounded by a fence.

On July 30, 1938, the municipality was requested in writing by the Sinsheim district office to implement the monument because of the danger to road traffic. However, the then mayor Georg Braun did not comply with the request. The Neckarbischofsheim gendarmerie department later criticized that the monument should be viewed as an obstacle in connection with customers parked in the surrounding furniture stores and suggested the front garden to the left of the Protestant church as an alternative parking space. However, the municipality also refused, referring to the low volume of traffic and sufficient parking space. A plot of land at the end of the village in the direction of Neidenstein was also discussed as a possible new location for the monument, where it was intended to build a HJ home. But Mayor Braun did not agree to that either.

In 1950 the stele was moved to Bahnhofstrasse 3 following a resolution by the local council . Due to the fire station that was newly built there in 1963 , the community moved the memorial to the Eschelbronn cemetery . There it stands today opposite the morgue and a memorial to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the First and Second World Wars .

Between 2006 and 2009 it was restored by the local stonemason Paul Schilling on behalf of the Eschelbronn Heimat- und Verkehrsverein with donations.
