Winter linden tree at the cemetery
The winter linden tree at the cemetery was a specimen of a winter linden tree in Eschelbronn , a municipality in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg, which was designated as a natural monument . It was on Bergstrasse next to the mortuary of the Eschelbronn cemetery .
On February 26, 2004, the tree was placed under monument protection because of its character that characterizes the townscape and its importance for the national culture (protected area number: 82260200002). On Bettweg there is also a winter linden tree, the old linden tree , which is designated as a natural monument and which was probably planted at the same time.
According to Eschelbronner Ortschronik, the tree was planted around 1850 by the great-grandfather of the farmer Emil Hauck from Oberstrasse and was therefore around 170 years old. The certified tree inspector, who was tasked with felling the tree in October 2019, estimated the age at only 90 to 120 years. According to one interpretation, the tree was planted at the entrance to the cemetery as a symbol for “a meeting place for calm, contemplation and peace”.
In 2019 , the tree suffered from a fire crust fungus infestation , which caused rot in the lower trunk area and the roots, as an expert commissioned by the regional council diagnosed. First there was an attempt to secure the crown of the tree with steel cables. However, especially with regard to the storms and snowfalls to be expected in the upcoming autumn and winter months, the tree was classified as a risk to road safety and felled in October 2019 by sawing and removing it piece by piece from top to bottom. A local wood turner received two pieces of a fork of the tree that were not affected by the rot, to use them to make objects of art and to exhibit them in the community's carpentry museum.
A replacement for the felled linden tree was discussed in the Eschelbronn municipal council.
