Old Methodist Church (Dumfries)
The Old Methodist Church is a former church building in the Scottish city of Dumfries in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1979 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, together with various surrounding buildings, it forms a category A monument ensemble.
history
The building was built in 1817 as an episcopal church. The London architect Thomas Frederick Hunt is responsible for the design . James Thomson , however, probably designed the interior in 1848. It was later used by a Methodist church. The building was profaned and has been used as a public building since 2000.
description
The building is at the intersection of Buccleuch Street ( A780 ) and Castle Street in central Dumfries. The layered masonry is rusticated on the ground floor . Four Ionic columns support the frieze and triangular pediment of the portico along Buccleuch Street. The facade along Castle Street is three axes wide. The polygonal apse emerges in the middle . It is designed with three narrow, elongated arched windows and colossal pilasters . Twin windows flank the apse. On the upper floor they close with round arches and a crown . A cornice runs along the facade . A parapet runs around it, which is worked as a balustrade at the height of the windows .
