Old Post Office (Brugg)
The Alte Post is a former post office in Brugg in the canton of Aargau . It is a cultural asset of regional importance and is on the main road next to the Red House .
history
The Alte Post, later the seat of the city police and part of the city administration, was built by Gottlieb Belart in 1893/94 according to plans by the Baden architecture firm Dorer & Füchslin. Shortly before the turn of the century, Otto Dorer and Albert Füchslin, the teachers of the Brugger architect Albert Froelich , designed several post offices in Bern , Olten and Winterthur as well as the cantonal technical center in Burgdorf .

The former post office, telegraph and telephone building erected directly outside the old town on the southern arterial road towards the train station is a mighty, three-storey wall building with a steep, slate-covered hipped roof . The façade facing the street is dominated by a three-axis, four-storey middle section with a transverse gable protruding from the longitudinal ridge. The broad structure is divided into a ground floor, entirely made of stone , with wide arched openings and the plastered upper floors separated from it by a cornice . The continuous house parapets, walls and crowning of the window axis strongly accentuate the vertical. The oriel towers on the upper floor with steep roof helmets are also elaborate sandstone work. At the back an extension from the early 20th century.
Interior of the building
The main axial portal leads into an anteroom and the staircase at the rear , from which cross corridors on the upper floors are used for access. The stairwell, which is illuminated by lead-glazed windows , has been preserved in its original condition . A staircase made of granite with wrought iron railing leads up to the level of the first floor, the continuation is a wooden staircase with a turned picket railing. A tiled floor with a mosaic structure adorns the anteroom on the ground floor. The interior is otherwise largely modernized.
