The old pumping station was part of the sewage disposal of the city of Hanau , is used today by a social institution and is a monument .

Geographical location

The old pumping station is located north of the increased Philippsruher Avenue and the River Main , near the confluence of the Kinzig in the Main and the border with the central city of Hanau on the district of Kesselstadt .

history

The old pumping station is one of the facilities of the first sewer system of the city of Hanau, built between 1890 and 1912 and is the direct outflow of the incorporation of the village of Kesselstadt to Hanau in 1907. In 1910 it is said to have gone into operation. The pumping station also served to operate the culvert under the Kinzig. Here wastewater was treated and sewage sludge was removed.

Around 1990 or as early as the mid-1960s, the old pumping station was given up for the operation of the municipal wastewater management. Since it was no longer used or was only used insufficiently, the building increasingly fell into disrepair.

In 2016 the building was sold to a private investor who renovated it for further use within just 14 months. Opened in 2018, the old pumping station was converted for a facility for short, long-term and intensive care as well as for the inpatient admission of children and adolescents "with challenging behavior", which is operated under the name Schwanennest II . For this purpose, the spacious and now partially dilapidated building was renovated, put back into use and a new building was added. The operator is the Main-Kinzig (BWMK) handicapped factory .

Current usage

The historic machine hall is used as a movement, gymnastics or event hall. A multifunctional building has been created that is available to the children and young people of the Swan Nest II, but is also rented to clubs and private individuals. 24 childcare places are available. The facility aims to relieve families with handicapped children by looking after them - for example when the family is on vacation. The facility itself is housed in the adjacent new building.

Historical building

The building was constructed in contemporary forms of the reform architecture of the time immediately before the First World War . There was a barrel-vaulted room about eight meters high that housed the clarifier. Here the sewage sludge was filtered out, skimmed off and taken out. There was also a machine hall illuminated by high thermal windows, in which mainly the electric motors that operated the pumps were located . The manager's apartment was also in an annex.

The historical building is a cultural monument for historical, artistic, urban planning and technical reasons due to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
