Notes from the Underworld (English title Festival Notes from the Underworld ) is an Austrian documentary under the direction of Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel . The film premiered on February 23, 2020 the Berlin world premiere and ran there in the section Panorama documents .

action

The legendary Wienerlied singer Kurt Girk and Alois Schmutzer , known as the King of the Vienna Underworld , tell of their lives in the Vienna underworld in the 1960s. For this they were finally sentenced to long prison terms in a controversial process because of their connections to the illegal card game Shock .

In calm black and white pictures, the charismatic protagonists tell about this time from their personal perspective. The two of them sit at the table in inns and barren rooms and share memories of their childhood in the war years and the post-war period when they were notorious. Some former companions and opponents also contribute anecdotes . Image sources from the ORF archive and the private photo album show that this is not fiction . The audience sees an unofficial version of the city's history, told by its former heroes, without moral judgment or transfiguration: shootings, gambling debts and unbelievable conditions in prison and in the courtroom, conveyed as oral history , which encourages the audience to respect the fearlessness of the two protagonists. Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel initiate the narrative flow with a few precise questions. The film shows an excerpt from Austrian post-war history. He concentrates on the 1960s and fills a gap in terms of content.
