The Quirein water wall on the flood map from 1541

The old water wall in San Quirino is a medieval building from the 14th or 15th century in the district of San Quirino in Bolzano . The wall that borders Horaz-Strasse on the east side has been a listed building since 1995 .

The Talfer once had a different course than it does today: at the height between Maretsch Castle and the Talfer Bridge , the river turned to the southwest and only flowed into the Eisack around today's Don-Bosco-Platz . After Count Meinhard II of Tyrol had ruled the entire city of Bozen in 1278, he decided to give the Talfer a shorter route. In 1282 the new bed was dug, and since then the Talfer has been flowing straight to the Eisack. There were fertile wineries where the new river bed was built . Due to the recurring Talfer floodsthey were constantly threatened. The owners of these wineries therefore had no choice but to protect themselves from flooding by building a strong wall , probably soon after 1282 and at the latest after 1442, when King Friedrich III. transferred responsibility for water protection structures to Talfer and Eisack to the Bolzano city council . The approx. 350 meter long wall is depicted in 1541 on the Bolzano flood map by Mayor Leonhard Hörtmair. Today it is no longer preserved in its entirety.
