Altenburg division

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Altenburg division describes a plan for the division of the entire Wettin region , which was introduced by the Saxon estates on July 16, 1445 in Altenburg to the two conflicting brothers, Elector Friedrich II. And Duke Wilhelm III. was submitted.

This was preceded by the death of Friedrich IV. , Whereby the Landgraviate of Thuringia to his two nephews, Friedrich II. And Wilhelm III. fell. Years earlier, he had ceded the claim to the more distant Meissnian areas for 15,000 guilders. Wilhelm was essentially awarded the heavily indebted Landgraviate of Thuringia and the Franconian possessions, the remaining lands fell to Friedrich. Emperor King Friedrich III. confirmed the division on April 1, 1446 and urged the brothers to unite. The plan was refused by them, however, and the Wettin areas became part of the Saxon fratricidal war , which was only settled with the Naumburg Peace of 1451.
