Altenmarkt Madonna
Indulgence letter

The Altenmarkter Madonna stands in the parish church of Our Lady Birth in Altenmarkt im Pongau , a market town in the state of Salzburg in Austria .

The gothic sculpture, 88 cm high, made of planer limestone , created in 1393, is an example of the so-called soft style . It comes from an unknown Bohemian artist. The naked child holds the apple of paradise in the left hand , with the right it grasps the hem of its mother's coat.

On August 14, 1393, the papal nuncio Ubaldinus da Torres wrote a letter of indulgence on the Vyšehrad in Prague , stating that all who pray in front of the miraculous image will receive an indulgence .

As the Madonna in front of the fir tree , she stood for a long time in the church choir and was moved to a separate side altar in 1638 , which was created by the Salzburg sculptor Hans Pernegger .

The Altenmarkt Madonna is carried every year in the procession to the Assumption of Mary on August 15th.
