The Old Fehrbacher Tunnel - originally just the Fehrbacher Tunnel - is a former railway tunnel of the Biebermühlbahn . The 1875 traffic passed building at the time was after at the Palatine Ludwig Railway situated Heiligenberg Tunnel the second longest rail tunnel in the Palatinate . In 1939, as part of the double-track expansion of the line, a tunnel to the west - the New Fehrbacher Tunnel - was added. Since the first track was closed in 1875, the latter has been used exclusively for traffic to Pirmasens . The two portals of the old Fehrbach tunnel were under monument protection .

location

The tunnel is located in the district of the independent city of Pirmasens. It serves to cross under the watershed between the Steinbach and the Blümelsbach . It crosses under the Bundesstraße 10 , the urban Zweibrücker Straße and an industrial area. To the northwest lies the eponymous district of Fehrbach .

history

The tunnel owes its creation to the fact that a direct connection from Pirmasens to the Landau – Zweibrücken main road failed due to the topographical conditions. Initially, the city vehemently opposed the branch line planned by the Bavarian government and continued to strive for a direct connection. The majority of the city council finally voted 24:14 in favor of the government draft, since otherwise the station would have been built in the Niedersimten area , which could no longer be viewed as a direct connection and which meant that a later rail connection to Kaiserslautern would have had no chance of being implemented. On November 25, 1875, the branch line starting from the Biebermühle was opened together with the main line section Annweiler – Zweibrücken.

In 1939 another track was put into operation almost parallel to the previous line, which also received a tunnel - the New Fehrbacher Tunnel . As a result, the previously existing one was renamed the Alter Fehrbacher Tunnel . From then on it was only used by downhill trains (heading north), as the gradient on the old route was less favorable than on the new one. As the renovation of the new route dragged on into the 1950s as a result of the damage of the Second World War , the old route was initially used exclusively for Pirmasens rail traffic from 1946 onwards. After the new route was restored, however, it was no longer used as planned, so that it and the tunnel were officially closed in 1996. Shortly before the rail reform, its possible reactivation and the costs incurred were examined. The reactivation of the old track has been discussed since the 2010s because the mountain track has reached its capacity limit.
