The Cluny Old Cemetery is a cemetery near the Scottish village of Sauchen in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1984 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The Fraser Mausoleum located in the cemetery is separately classified as a Category A monument.

history

At the latest since 1225 there was a church which was consecrated to the Irish Scottish saint Machar . The building was probably expanded over the centuries, as it was described as a cruciform church in 1732 . In 1789 the church was in ruins and was finally demolished. Today's Cluny Parish Church with its own attached cemetery was built right next to it.

The Cluny Old Cemetery is on a slope. The oldest gravestones date from the early 19th century. The grave place of the Linton family , designed in the classical Greek Revival , is striking . Archibald Simpson is being considered as the architect . Probably in the late 1890s in the style of early Italian emerged Renaissance with terracotta embodied monumental grave of James Reid . Four Mortsafes of the same design are set up on a platform about six meters long and four meters wide . They are shaped like coffins and close with granite slabs 2.15 m long, 74 cm wide and 15 cm thick . The wrought iron cages below are 28 cm high.

Fraser Mausoleum

The Fraser Mausoleum dominates the cemetery. It was built in 1808. The granite round building has a classicistic design. It rests on a flat plinth and ends with a dome. A wrought iron gate blocks the entrance portal. The surrounding frieze bears the inscription: "ELIZABETH FRASER OF CASTLE FRASER MDCCC VIII".
