history
There was a Jewish cemetery in Breisach as early as the 17th century , the exact location of which is no longer known. In 1755 , the current old cemetery was laid out on the Günzburger family's property, which also contained a wooden mikvah (ritual bath). After extensions in 1821 and 1842, it had an area of 17.44 acres . The last burial took place in this cemetery in 1874, as a new Jewish cemetery was established in Breisach in 1850 .
During the Nazi era , the cemetery was completely destroyed. Of the approximately 130 tombstones ( mazewot ) still in existence today , many are only preserved in fragments. The oldest tombstone is from 1769.
