description
The old Jewish cemetery of Lemgo is located on the Ostertorwall (formerly Bone Hauerwall ) on the corner of Hirtenstrasse. The cemetery was occupied from 1721 until the New Jewish Cemetery was built at the beginning of the 20th century.
During the Reichspogromnacht in 1938, the Jewish cemetery was desecrated and all gravestones ( mazewot ) were removed. In 1940 the site was expropriated and incorporated into the city ramparts.
In 1948 the cemetery was restored to a fair condition. As the old tombstones from the cemetery were no longer there, 8 tombstones from the Jewish cemetery in Hohenhausen were placed there.
