The canton was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. Its municipalities come from the previous canton of Verdun-Ouest .

In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the pairing Marie Jeanne Dumont / Samuel Hazard (both PS) won against Didier Fléaux / Julie Fleurant (both UMP ) with a share of the vote of 58.78% (turnout: 42.42%).
