Old Jewish cemetery Velbert-Neviges
The Jewish cemetery Neviges is a Jewish cemetery in the Neviges district in the city of Velbert in the Mettmann district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It is located on Zwingenberger Weg.
history
In 1804, 158 Jews lived in the lordship of Hardenberg around Neviges, in 1849 59 in Neviges itself. In 1880, 44 and in 1932 only 14 Jews lived in Neviges, which belonged to the Elberfeld synagogue community , which was attached to Wuppertal-Elberfeld in 1932. A prayer room was occupied at the end of the 18th century, the last used, meanwhile dilapidated prayer house was demolished in 1929. The cemetery "am Kuhlendahl" was laid out in 1791 and occupied until 1929, and until 1810 also by Jews from Elberfeld. Extensions were made in 1844, 1859 and 1887. 23 tombstones have been preserved on the burial site that is still preserved.
Burial place for Russian prisoners of war
During the Second World War, 30 Russian soldiers and civilians were also buried here between 1942 and 1945. The common tomb with two floor slabs, which show all names, is located near the exit of the cemetery.
