history

The Jewish cemetery located in the area of the city of Heiligenhaus today belonged to the historical place "Kettwig vor der Brücke" , which today belongs to Essen as a district .

Jewish families first settled in Kettwig in the 18th century. The size of the small congregation was 36 in 1885 and 45 in 1932. A synagogue is mentioned around 1800; this was probably the building that served as a synagogue until it was destroyed in 1938.

The cemetery on Görscheider Weg is the second Jewish burial place of the Kettwig Jewish community after an older cemetery on Blomericher Weg (near the Blomericher Hof in Ratingen) that was used from 1786 . It was documented from 1888 to 1945; 59 tombstones have been preserved. Today the cemetery is fenced and locked.
