The Old Jewish Cemetery in Sušice (German: Schüttenhofen), Okres Klatovy district in the south-west Bohemian region of Plzeňský kraj , Czech Republic , is the older of the two Jewish cemeteries in Sušice, which are the only reminder of the city's Jewish population.

history

The cemetery was laid out within the city wall in 1626 after the application of the Jewish citizens was granted in August 1661. The oldest still legible tomb is from 1708 and contains numerous valuable gravestones in the baroque and classical style. Funerals continued until 1875.

Due to the small area of ​​the cemetery, there were always space bottlenecks, so that the community had to request the purchase or allocation of further small plots, specifically in 1661, 1739, 1772, 1791 and 1810, until the new Jewish cemetery was finally available from 1875 .

In 1987/88 the cemetery was restored. The Old Jewish Cemetery has been a protected cultural monument since 1992 .
