Old district court, today the artist house

The old district court in Cuxhaven - Ritzebüttel , Schlossgarten 4 / Südersteinstrasse, has been the artist house in the castle garden since 1992 . The building is under the protection of historical monuments in Lower Saxony and is included in the list of architectural monuments in Cuxhaven .

history

In 1864 the law on the reorganization of the administration and administration of justice of the Ritzebüttel office was passed, separating administration and jurisdiction. In 1892, a building for the district court was therefore erected near Ritzebüttel Castle at the instigation of the administrator Werner and with the approval of the Hamburg citizenship . At the instigation of the administrator Kaemmerer, the new building for the Cuxhaven District Court was built at Deichstrasse  12a by 1904 .

The old district court building was then used as an office building by the administrator for all administrative tasks of the municipality or city (registry office, beach office, servants 'office, servants' health insurance fund, archive). From the 1920s - after the construction of the town hall in Cuxhaven - the residents' registration office, police, insurance and poor management as well as the state treasury were housed in the house. After the expansion of the town hall, the engineering and surveying department (land registry) moved into the building in 1938 .

Since the end of 1992 the building has been used as an artist's house in the palace garden. An association runs the house with the aim of building “a bridge between our guest artists and the people from the district and the city of Cuxhaven”. Talented graduates of the art schools are supported and the guest artists can exhibit here. Workshops and lectures complement the activities.
