Ritzebüttel ( Low German Ritzbüttel ) is part of the city of Cuxhaven in the Lower Saxony district of the same name .

history

Ritzebüttel was a place in the former Hamburg office of Ritzebüttel and in its successor in the former rulership of Ritzebüttel .

The place was first mentioned in a document on July 19, 1325 as Ritsebutle , when Wolderich Lappe promised in a contract that he would no longer take action against Jan von Stotel and Luder von Wersebe . The name probably comes from the first name Rikert or Rike and the word -büttel and means something like Rikert's estate .

After the siege and capture by Hamburg , the Lappes sold the Ritzebüttel Castle and the surrounding area to Hamburg on July 31, 1394. With this, the seat of the Hamburg captain passed from Neuwerk to Ritzebüttel.

On December 13, 1872, the two places Ritzebüttel and Cuxhaven merged. Subsequently the place was called Cuxhaven, although Ritzebüttel was always the larger and more important place and actually still forms the city center of Cuxhaven today. On March 15, 1907, Cuxhaven received city rights and on January 2, 1924, left the Ritzebüttel estate. Today Ritzebüttel no longer appears in the Cuxhaven urban structure.
