Wilhelm Marcus Walther (born January 7, 1846 in Ritzebüttel , † April 24, 1924 in Gehlsdorf ) was a German Lutheran theologian and rector of the University of Rostock .

Life

Wilhelm Walther was the son of a pastor. After attending school at the Domgymnasium in Verden , Walther matriculated in 1865 to study theology at the University of Erlangen . Study visits to Marburg , Tübingen and Göttingen followed until 1869 . As a student he became a member of the Erlanger , Marburger and Göttingen Wingolf . In 1870 Walther returned to Ritzebüttel and became pastor adjunctus to his father, whose pastor Walther took over after three years.

In 1895 Walther was offered the full professorship for church and dogma history at the University of Rostock, which he held until his retirement in 1920. In 1907 Walther was elected rector of the University of Rostock for a year, where he dealt with the admission of women to study , among other things . In 1917 Walther received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculties in Rostock and Leipzig for his scientific achievements . In 1919 he was a founding member of the Society for Church History and, since 1898, a member of the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology .

On May 21, 1878 he married Elsa Bünsow (* 1858), daughter of a tree nursery owner from Kiel. He had ten children with her, including the sociologist Andreas Walther . His daughter Emmy married the theologian Justus Köberle (1871–1908).
