The Lappe or Lappen family was a manorial family in the land of Hadeln . It can be traced from 1315 to 1419. Later bearers of the name cannot be clearly assigned to the gender. Members are referred to in documents as knights (miles) or squires (famuli or armigeri ) . In 1393 they referred to themselves as "Miners of the Archbishopric of Bremen ". Formally, they were followers of the dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg , who colonized and owned the land of Hadeln .

history

In 1324 Duke Erich I of Saxony-Lauenburg pledged court rights in the parishes of Wolde and Groden to Wolderich Lappe for 200 marks , which secured him a good income. From documents from 1329 and 1332 one can infer Wolderich's important position in the country of Hadeln.

In 1355 an Alverich Lappe put his "stone house" Erich III. von Sachsen-Bergedorf available because he did not have his own means to enforce his rights in Hadeln. It is not certain whether the stone house already refers to the tower in Ritzebüttel , which was the seat of the Lappe family since 1370 at the latest. In 1357 Erich Hamburg had to secure the merchants from robbery and undertake to take action against robbers in the Land of Hadeln and to grant access to the tower at Neuwerk . Hamburg's interest in Hadeln and Neuwerk lay primarily in securing the Lower Elbe from sea and beach robberies. The Lappe family is not mentioned in this agreement. In 1349 five members of this Lappe family, who exercised jurisdiction in a part of Hadeln, had committed themselves for one year to take action against robbery of Hamburg and other merchants. Similar agreements are also attested for later years. The Lappe family received 20 marks a year from Hamburg. They also received 10 marks from the Neuwerk tower captain. In 1372 Hamburg took over the judicial rights itself. In the 1370s and early 1380s there were close contacts between Willekin Lappe and Hamburg. In 1378 Willekin was on Hamburg's side in a dispute between Erich IV of Saxony-Lauenburg and Hamburg, in which Wilken was captured by Erich. In 1370 he had still vowed to want to “sit at his service with body and property and his castle Ritzebüttel”. In 1382 fights broke out between the Lappe family and Erich IV von Sachsen-Lauenburg. The Lappes lost their possessions in Nordleda and had to pay homage to Erich. In 1390 Wolde Lappe became the Count's representative in the Lauenburg part of Hadeln.

In 1393, Hamburg conquered its tower in Ritzebüttel with the help of a sausage contingent . The reasons for the change in the relationship between the Lappe family and Hamburg are not known. The Lappes had previously carried out an attack on the tower at Neuwerk , which Hamburg could have used as a pretext to exercise its interests in the Lower Elbe itself. A year later, in 1394, Wolder and Alverich Lappe had to sell both Ritzebüttel and their own property in the Hadeln region to Hamburg for 2,000 marks.
