Old department store on Paradeplatz

The old department store was a magnificent baroque building in Mannheim , which was built between 1724 and 1741 on the square N 1 adjacent to the Paradeplatz .

history

The Baroque in 1724 was commissioned by Carl Philipp , the reigning Count Palatine and Elector of the Palatinate . The building was completed under Elector Carl Theodor in 1741. The Italian architect Alessandro Galli da Bibiena was responsible for the design and construction management of the first phase, and Paul Egell created the reliefs . The largest interior space was a lavishly decorated hall with a stucco ceiling that served as a festival and courtroom. It was later used for French comedies as well. In 1743 Johann Friedrich Molk gave numerous performances in this hall with his acting troupe. In 1849 the hall served as a courtroom where revolutionaries were sentenced.

In the years 1903 to 1909 the building was extensively converted into the town hall according to plans by Richard Perrey. The new citizens' committee hall of the city of Mannheim was 469 m² in size. On November 21 and 22, 1918, the assembly of the Baden workers 'and soldiers' councils, which declared itself to be the "Pre-Parliament of the Free People's Republic", met there.

It was badly damaged in World War II. In the years 1949 to 1958, reconstruction began and the HADEFA (House of Specialists ) was created. The remains of the arcades were removed from the Breite Straße. The baroque arcades in the left wing were converted into round-arched shop windows. The building now housed the department store shops as well as a café and a restaurant. Nevertheless, in 1961 an urban architecture competition was announced for the building. The award went to the design by Leonberg architect Roland Ostertag , whose design provided for the complete destruction of all historical components and the pyramid on Paradeplatz. The partially rebuilt structure was therefore completely demolished in 1965. In 1967, however, construction was stopped for financial reasons. In 1984 the citizens' initiative "Bürgeraktion Altes Kaufhaus" was founded. A referendum in November 1986 called for a faithful reconstruction, but the quorum was not achieved. That is why the post-modern Mannheim townhouse was built on this site in 1991 , based on a design by the Mannheim architect Mutschler .
