The Old Town Hall of Selkirk is located in the center of the Scottish Royal Burgh Selkirk in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The foundation stone of the town hall was laid in 1803 and construction was completed the following year. In addition to the city administration, the building was also home to the sheriff's court until the 1870s . Walter Scott was sheriff of Selkirk between 1799, formally only from 1803, and 1832. The great historical importance as Scott's place of work was taken into account in the monument classification. A statue in front of the town hall commemorates the work of Scott. In 1835 £ 227 was spent renovating the interior. In 1891 the building was slightly redesigned. The town hall was later given up and largely converted into a museum.

description

The City Hall is on the south side of the market square on High Street ( A7 ). The two-story building is designed in a classical style. Bright corner stones and bezels made of polished stone blocks stand out in color from the dark brickwork. The northwest-facing front is three axes wide. The bell tower protruding in the middle is striking. The 33.5 m high tower has a square floor plan. Commemorative plaques flank the double-winged entrance portal at its foot. The plaques, unveiled in 1935 by Charles Cospatrick Archibald Douglas-Home, 13th Earl of Home , commemorate the granting of Burgh rights by King James V in 1535 and the work of Walter Scott at this location. The tower, designed with arched openings and tower clocks, closes with an octagonal stone helmet with a weather vane. One-storey business premises with flat window elements emerge flanking. At the back of the building there is a two-story wing on the left. The town hall closes with a slate hipped roof .
