The old stone house is a building designated as a cultural monument in the center of Mechterstädt .

history

In 775 a "villa Mehderstede" was mentioned as an estate of the Hersfeld monastery. The property later came to the Reinhardsbrunn monastery , then to the Katharinenkloster in Eisenach. Around 1508, the Mechterstedt manor and part of the village belonged to the Lords of Reckrodt , and another part to the Lords of Hopfgarten .

In 1526 the stone house was built or extensively rebuilt. In 1531 Jobst von Reckrodt was the sole feudal lord over the manor, the inheritance and higher courts and the church patronage ("jus patronatus"). After 1592 Herrmann von Reckrodt sold the estate, along with all affiliations and all rights, back to the Lords of Hopfgarten. During the Thirty Years War , Mechterstädt was plundered several times . In 1642 Mechterstädt became a border village of the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha and was escorted, and Ernst Sittig von Hopfgarten sold the estate with most of the subjects, courts and the church patronage to Colonel Sergeant Wolf Conrad von Graefendorff .

In 1838/39 Duke Ernst I acquired the Gräfendorff manor along with the Hopfgarten share, and the place now became an official village of the Tenneberg ducal justice office . Four years later the manor was dissolved and the estate was left to the villagers for sale. The former manor buildings were converted for residential purposes. After the Second World War , the building became the property of the municipality. Around 2000 the residential use was given up and part of the outbuildings demolished. The stone house was opened to visitors for the Open Monument Day 2012 and the future of the house was discussed with the participation of the monument protection authorities .

The old stone house is a building made of limestone rubble. It has two floors and a vaulted cellar . The door and window openings on the ground floor were apparently changed several times. On the upper floor there are two rectangular windows with typical profiles of the Renaissance period . Inside there are ceiling paintings from the 18th century.

A two-storey half - timbered wing is attached at right angles to the main building , which can be assigned to the time around 1700 according to the structural forms. The surrounding walls are partially preserved.
