Althütte is a scattered settlement in the Spiegelau municipality in the Freyung-Grafenau district .

location

The clearing island is located at 774 meters above sea level at the foot of the Kleiner and Großer Rachel on the road between Frauenau and Spiegelau .

history

Althütte owes its origins to the glass industry . In the neighboring village of Klingenbrunn there was already a glassworks before 1521 . Like other flying huts , it was moved to a more wood-rich location because of the large amount of wood it consumed. In 1680 it was built in Althütte.

In 1752 Christian Hilz acquired the glassworks. In 1756 the hut burned down and was rebuilt on the Ochsenkopf mountain. When it was crushed by the snow in 1783 and finally shut down, a new glassworks was built at the Althütte site.

The Hilz, who had been Hilz since 1806, were masters of Klingenbrunn-Althütte until 1832. In that year Felix von Hilz sold the glassworks with an area of 2518 hectares to the state of Bavaria for 107,000 guilders due to increasing unprofitability.

The state administration mainly took care of the forestry in the extensive forests. The corridors were sold by the state for free ownership. The glassworks with only 10 hectares of land was managed by Josef von Maiern from Mindelheim and the company Paul Heinz & Comp. from Upper Franconia . In 1839 the owner consortium sold part of the glassworks to Anton Hellmayer and his wife Katharina. Hellmeier built a new glassworks in Spiegelau, Heinz and von Maiern founded another one near Flanitzhütte , while operations in Althütte were shut down.

By 1840, nine homeowners had settled in the settlement, whose property was between 2.5 and five hectares. The entire town hall at that time comprised 50 hectares. In 1860 Althütte had 81 inhabitants in eleven buildings. Over the years the place has seen only minor changes. It belonged to the community of Klingenbrunn, which was formed in 1834, until the name of the entire community was changed to Spiegelau in 1959. In 1970, 92 residents lived here.
