Former Federal Chancellor

The term former Federal Chancellor , also shortened to former Chancellor, is common in Germany and Austria for a Federal Chancellor who is no longer in office . In Switzerland, the spelling old Chancellor is common.

Germany

Former incumbents

In Germany, Gerhard Schröder is currently the only former Chancellor living. However, he is only addressed as Mr Federal Chancellor , never as Mr Former Federal Chancellor or Mr Ex-Federal Chancellor . In the media, it can be made clear who is meant by adding the word "Alt-".

The largest number of former Federal Chancellors still living at the same time that has been reached in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany is three. This has already been achieved three times:

  1. Ludwig Erhard , Kurt Georg Kiesinger and Willy Brandt (1974–1977)
  2. Kurt Georg Kiesinger , Willy Brandt , Helmut Schmidt (1982–1988)
  3. Helmut Schmidt , Helmut Kohl , Gerhard Schröder (2005–2015)

Former Federal Chancellors may officially use the title of Federal Chancellor with the addition a. D. ( out of service ). In addition, former Federal Chancellors continue to be entitled to a company car with a driver and personal protection . As a rule, former Federal Chancellors run an office that is located at the German Bundestag to represent them and carry out their duties .

Austria

In Austria, Franz Vranitzky , Viktor Klima , Wolfgang Schüssel , Alfred Gusenbauer , Werner Faymann and Christian Kern are the former Federal Chancellors and Brigitte Bierlein are the former Federal Chancellors.

Former Chancellor

Even if former Chancellor is a common abbreviation for former Federal Chancellor, it applies to every former Chancellor. I.e. any former university or college chancellor can also be meant by former chancellors.
