Altoona is a city in Eau Claire County in the US state of Wisconsin . The population was 6,819 according to the 2009 census. Altoona has a train station on the Union Pacific Railroad .
history
Settlement of Altoona began in 1881 when Chicago, St Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway selected the location for a new station to relieve the congested Eau Claire station . The first residents moved to the town in May 1882, and the station opened in May of that year.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, the place had 6,698 inhabitants, who were distributed among 2,844 households. The population density was 1638.6 inhabitants per km ². The population is 95.89% white, the rest from other ethnic groups.
