The Biel old town ( French Vieille Ville ) constitutes only 9 hectares, the smallest in terms of area of 10 quarters Biel . The medieval old town is located away from the Bieler Neustadt, which most non-Biel residents refer to as the old town, and thus on the edge of today's center.

geography

The old town is located a little north of the center of the Biel city area. It is located on and around the limestone protrusion, which is slightly higher than the rest of the modern city, of the still existing Roman spring at the southern foot of the Jura .

The quarter extends from Zentralstrasse and Jakob-Rosius-Strasse in the west to Gerbergasse and Neumarktstrasse in the east and from Schützengasse and Jurastrasse in the north to General-Dufour-Strasse in the south.

It is located as a settlement island nestled between the Neustadt-Nord and Rebberg districts .

history

This medieval part of Biel was founded between 1220 and 1230. The northern city wall, the Ober- and Untergasse, the Jura suburbs, the castle and the Burggasse, the square called the Ring and the Untergässli are particularly reminiscent of this time.

Today's external appearance of the old town largely corresponds to that of the 18th and early 19th centuries , although the older traces and basic patterns of the houses and the fortifications are visible. It is noteworthy that the northern part of this quarter on Kanalgasse - with the exception of Obergasse - is largely free of traffic and there are no major retailers or chain stores in it.
