Under a aluminosis (also bauxite workers' disease ) refers to pathological changes in the lung caused by chronic exposure over alumina smoke arise or dust. Aluminosis is a pneumoconiosis and is an occupational disease that is subject to compensation .

Pathophysiology

The aluminum oxide particles interact directly with the cell membranes of the lung tissue. After their deposition in the alveoli (alveoli), the particles result in increased fibroblast activity and thus to gradual tissue remodeling of the parenchyma of the lung. The risk increases with the increase in the respirable portion of the dust fraction and with the exposure time.

With a latency of around 10–20 years, the inhalation of aluminum oxide dust leads to progressive, diffuse interstitial pulmonary fibrosis with a tendency to shrink. The extent of the disease varies greatly from person to person. The aluminosis often ends in a restrictive ventilation disorder . Bronchial carcinoma (lung cancer) is one of the long-term consequences .
