Alvin Myerovich

Alvin Myerovich (born December 11, 1906 in Tula , Russia , † June 4, 1996 in Manchester Township , New Jersey ) was an American musician and actor .

Life

Alvin Myerovich was born in Russia in 1906 and immigrated to the United States in 1923. He earned a bachelor's degree in music from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a master's degree from Case Western Reserve University .

He later settled in Youngstown , Ohio . There taught from 1931 to 1963 as a professor of music and violin at Youngstown State University . During World War II, he served in the US Army and rose to the rank of technical sergeant .

In the mid-1960s he moved to Pikesville , Maryland. At the age of 60 he discovered acting for himself after students won him over as an actor for a play. At first he mainly appeared in the community theater before he got the role of the rabbi in the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof in 1980 . He later performed the piece on three tours across the United States.

He made his feature film debut in 1987 as the pickpocket Mr. Schumacher in the dance film Dirty Dancing . In 1990 he played a Jewish immigrant in Barry Levinson's Avalon .

Myerovich was since 1944 with Olga Myerovich (nee Parfenchuk, 1920-2003), the first violinist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra , married. The marriage resulted in two children, the stage actress Kim Lynne Myerovich (1944-1991) and the son Gary Myerovich.
